Bombers Weather Avalanche

Coming off the recent 6-3 loss to the Avalanche a desperate Bombers squad was in dire need of points on Saturday night. Despite boasting the top two point scorers in the CMCHL, the Avalanche won their last meeting through strong secondary scoring, accounting for five of their six goals. With games becoming limited the Bombers were looking to pick up steam as they moved towards the playoffs.

Right from the first shift it was clear Adam Moulton was going to be an impact player on the night, using his combination of speed, strength and skill to give the Avalanche defensemen fits. After an early Tim Edward slashing penalty Moulton put the Bombers up one nothing with their first powerplay goal of the night.

Although the Bombers were carrying play the threat of Torris and Tassone still loomed large. The Avalanche were unfortunate not to tie up the game but for star ‘keeper Dan Gonzalez who made an early statement through some stellar netminding.

As the first frame wore on Moulton would add to his early tally picking up his second from Brad Dyburgh to increase the lead to two. An inspired Bombers team pressed for more and on his next shift Moulton completed the natural hat trick with a trademark dash down the left wing where he slotted the puck under the Jordan Dyckman. An early 3-0 lead propelled the Bombers into the second.

As the second began the lopsided score provided for some rough play from both teams in a tense second period. The Avalanche continued to put pressure on an at times embattled Gonzalez but he refused to budge, showing the pedigree that has earned him the reputation as a top ‘keeper in the league. Late in the period current coach Curtis Dueck found another crack in Dyckman’s armor, scoring on the powerplay. This increased the lead to 4-0 and set up an eventful third period.

Knowing their slim hopes of keeping the game alive were slipping away the Avalanche finally found a way to beat Gonzalez early in the third. Minutes later a controversial penalty call put them on the powerplay, giving them an opportunity to climb within two. Fortunately for the Bombers the penalty-killing tandem of Koepke and Ahlgren provided a strong defensive shift that culminated in a goal at the other end with Koepke finishing well in front off a nice feed from Ahlgren.

Minutes later a chippy shift ended controversially when Adam Moulton was given five, ten and a game for a supposed crosscheck into the neck area of Jordan Dyckman. Moulton maintained that he was pushed in from behind but his pleas fell on deaf ears. Somehow amidst the large skirmish Moulton was the only player penalized on the play. To add to the Bombers problems the Avalanche would score on the ensuing powerplay, once again cutting the deficit to three. Doug Wiens found himself on the score sheet after potting a rebound off Gonzalez, with the assist going to Tim Edward.

Coach Gareth Jones called a timeout at this point to settle down an emotional team and straighten their bearings for the remaining period. The delay seemed to work as the team was successful in killing off the remainder of the powerplay with the additional boost of a second shorthanded goal from Jason Koepke. Moving into the Avalanche zone Koepke let a hard slapshot go that somehow found its way past Dyckman. Up by four the Bombers would hang on to the lead and successfully close out the game to earn a big two points.

Final Score: Bombers 6-2 Avalanche

The Bombers continue to sit in tenth place, now 5 pts up on the Gladiators… Their next two games are against a TLC team just 6 points ahead in the standings and 8th in the league… Matt Peters was strangely absent from the game, with the Bombers refusing comment on the situation… Adam Moulton now has 17 goals on the season to lead the team

Avalanche Crush Bombers

Sitting in tenth place before meeting the Avalanche Saturday night, the Bombers were looking to leapfrog the ninth place Knights and start a late season push into the playoffs. With the new wildcard rules in effect this season they were hoping to gain some ground on the sixth seed and avoid the first round wildcard matchup. Standing in their way however were the league’s top two offensive threats in Adam Torris and Stef Tassone, who hoped to help further cement their place near the top of the standings.

The Bombers would start uncharacteristically slow and found themselves down by two early in the first. Goals from Kenny Locke and Craig Thiessen dug the Bombers an early hole, one they wouldn’t recover from. Despite a late goal from Brad Dryburgh the Bombers were lucky to be within a goal of the Avalanche, having had a hard time containing the dynamic duo of Torres and Tassone.

To make matters worse the team would once again surrender an early goal with Thiessen potting his second of the night. Spurred on by the increase in their deficit the Bombers began to press hard, determined not to let another period slip away. They soon found their second of the night when Sam Ahlgren buried a centering pass from Matt Peters to cut the deficit back to one. In spite of their surge TWU was still having trouble containing Torres who looked threatening on every shift. Dan Gonzalez provided his usual heroics to keep his team in the game in the face of ever mounting pressure.

If the first two periods had been any indication the Bombers dam was bound to burst sooner than later. This occurred with a string of three straight goals from the Avalanche including two from Torris and the third for Thiessen, who played the unlikely hero of the night. Down 6-2 the game looked out of reach but a heroic individual effort from top-scorer Adam Moulton cut the Avalanche lead to three, midway through the third. Playing short-handed he snagged the puck at his own blueline to begin a one-on-one rush where he placed the puck just inside the post. This combined with the overall shaky game from the Avalanche goalkeeper gave the Bombers some life but not for want of effort they weren’t able to convert again. Final Score: Bombers 3-6 Avalanche.

Matt Peters continues to pay back the team for his frequent call-ups continuing to pick up points… Braden Humphrey re-injured his broken hand during the week and will be placed back on the IR for the time being… Alex Love was missing for this game and will return for the rubber match against the Avalanche next week… Time is running out for the Bombers to make headway in the standings as they only have six games remaining

TWU Bombers – Bleed Orange

Bombers Ground Jets

Entering Saturday nights CMCHL action the TWU Bombers found them selves sitting in tenth place, just five points ahead of the Southgate Jets. In spite of zero wins to their name the Jets boasted twelve points on the season due to the penalty point. A win in the game would push them to within three of the Bombers and a possible wildcard spot. Additionally the Jets featured multiple former Bombers including 2011 playoff hero Chris “Cheech” Hirano and one-time captain Curtis Hart. This mix created a potentially hostile post-Christmas game for the Bombers, who were looking to move up in the standings.

Due to a lack of full-time starters the Bombers were forced to make several call-ups and put coaches Curtis Dueck and Gareth Jones into action. Micah Cockrill and Thomas Koshman highlighted the new faces on forward while Braden Reimer suited up in place of the suspended Dan Gonzalez.

The game began with a furious pace, befitting the speedy Bombers against an outmanned Southgate team. Before long Gareth Jones factored into the game when his first shot rang of the post after a pass from brother Braden. The Bombers continued to press and before long opened up the scoring. After Micah Cockrill drove wide to force a Jets defender into a penalty, he managed to capitalize on the subsequent powerplay. Curtis Dueck found him streaking down the left wing and using that same speed, beat the Jets defender and slotted the puck home for his first career Bomber’s goal.

In spite of the early deficit the Jets continued to press for the tying goal, not giving the impression that they were a last place team. Not for lack of effort they fell behind even further when Bomber’s captain Rick Fairley wired a slap shot up high while streaking down the wing. This put the Bombers up 2-0 heading into the second.

Looking to put the game away early the Bombers found themselves up 3-0 after only nineteen seconds. Braden Jones hooked up with call-up Thomas Koshman who found himself all alone with the Jet’s keeper and buried the puck low. With the assist Jones earned his first point after coming back from an extended absence due to injury.

Meanwhile, coach Gareth Jones was pressing hard to earn a goal in only his second game of the season. Despite a concerted effort he was continually foiled by the Southgate keeper, who seemed to have an answer for everything Jones threw at him. Even without adding to their lead the Bombers began to take the game over dominating at all ends of the ice. They found a way through when Jason Koepke scored a goal from has backside, sliding the backhand past the sprawled Jets’ keeper. To make matters worse for the reeling Jets, Gareth Jones finally scored his goal just minutes later, putting his team up by five and effectively sealing the game by the end of the second.

Even with the 5-0 lead the Bombers continued to press for more in the third, coming close on chances from Braden Jones and Jalen Wuerch, who was moved up to forward for the final frame. Jones hit a post in front early while Wuerch found himself on a two-on-one and barely missed the top corner with a hard wrister. The Jets managed a brief flourish when Chris Hirano introduced himself into the game with a bomb off the crossbar but was never able to beat Reimer. Micah Cockrill would add another goal late to finalize a 6-0 score and please his mass of supporters in attendance. Final Score: Bombers 6-0 Jets.

Up next week for the Bombers is the second of the home-and-home with the Jets… The Bombers will look to move into ninth place in the standings… LW Braden Humphrey is rumored to be making his return after a two-month absence with a broken hand… Dan Gonzalez will be back in net for the Bombers after serving his one game suspension.

Bombers Reporter Back In Action

The Bombers association would like to apologize to the fans for the recent lack of game reports and ensures steps have been taken so the situation will not arise again. Shortened game reports for previous games can be found below along with the most current report from the Bombers vs Canadians match on November 19th.

Bombers Win Second Straight

Looking to establish their first winning streak of the season, the Bombers faced off against the Central City Canadians in a battle between two teams close together in the CMCHL standings. Youth faced off against experience as a veteran Canadians team looked to contain the speedy Bombers offensive corps while employing a thin eight-man roster.

If the Bombers had any doubts about their oppositions’ ability, their questions were soon answered in a fast-paced first period. Despite limited speed and size the Canadians hockey acumen was on full display, out-chancing the Bombers for the better part of the first ten minutes. In spite of an 11-5 shot count favoring the Bombers they were limited to very few opportunities.

In spite of this they managed to squeeze out a 2-0 lead in the dying minutes thanks to two pieces of sublime skill. First, Sam Ahlgren split the Canadiens d-men with some slick stick handling and finished with a deft backhander. Then, Adam Moulton picked up the puck for a breakaway of his own, out waiting Frank Locke and putting the puck over the sprawled Canadian’s keeper.

The Bombers headed into the intermission fortunate to be holding a lead, relying heavily on Dan Gonzalez for support.

The second began much the same as the first and to no ones surprise the Canadian’s halved the Bombers lead early on. However captain Rick Fairley, playing an inspired game, restored the two-goal lead within two minutes.

The Canadians continued to outchance the Bombers and found a goal at 4:06 off the stick of Shawn Boone. Once again the Bombers responded quickly, Ahlgren potting his second of the game. The lead was short lived however as two goals in the last minute and a half evened the game at four goals a piece, the last goal a supposed back-breaker, put home on the powerplay by Don Pilon.

During the break an animated Rick Fairley issued an emotional plea, urging his teammates to play with an increased desire. The Bombers, spurred on by their leader finally woke up and came out flying to start the third.

Call-up Matt Peters found the back of the net for the second game in a row just ten seconds in. His strong play continuing to make a case for his sticking with the big club. Forty-six seconds later Adam Moulton buried his second of the night and his team leading ninth of the season. Brad Dryburgh found Moulton streaking up the left wing and sprung for him the breakaway.

The two goals coupled with a renewed commitment enabled the Bombers to ride out the rest of the third comfortably, doing well to deal with the increasingly chippy Canadians.

The game was punctuated by a seventh goal for the Bombers scored by Ben Stewart. He found himself alone in front of the net short-handed and in spite of mishandling the puck at first had the composure to bury his first as a Bomber.

Final Score: Bombers 7 – 4 Canadians

News and Notes:

Sam Ahlgren’s 5 pt night (2g, 3a) moved him into the team’s points lead with 15… Braden Jones is expected to slot back in to the lineup next week after a 6 game absence… Matt Peters has 5 pts in his two games as a call up… Braden Humphrey remains on the IR, recovering from a broken hand… Jalen Weurch made his first appearance in 4 games, he and Joel Robertson are still looking for their first goals of the season.

Previous Games:

Bombers 3 – 2 North Delta Knights

A workmanlike performance supplemented by excellent goaltending from Dan Gonzalez. Call-up Matt Peters impressed on the night with a three-point effort.

Bombers 3 – 5 North Delta Knights

Another tight game that went the oppositions way, due to a lack of consistency from the Bombers. Moments of brilliant team play were marred by an overall lack of work ethic.

Bombers 5 – 7 CLA Hounds

A hard fought contest that saw the Bombers narrowly lose after closing a four-goal deficit, only to lose 7-5. LW Braden Humphrey was lost for 6-8 weeks with a broken hand.

Bombers Tame Hounds

At the start of the season the October 22nd match up between the CLA Hounds and TWU Bombers was one many had circled on their calendars. The re-match between last years Cup finalists was set to some interesting story lines with Bombers, last years champs, struggling out of the gate and the Hounds starting hot, looking to prove themselves after last years defeat. Hounds star Tyler Martens had continued his high scoring ways, once again near the top of CMCHL scoring. The Bombers would look to keep him in check and jump on any opportunities a defensively sound Hounds team would give them.

The game opened with a furious pace, both teams looking to establish footing early. They would trade chances, neither ‘tender willing to give in until Sam Ahlgren opened the scoring for the Bombers. A point shot from Johnny Woof found it’s way to Ahlgren’s stick off a rebound and the center was able to put it away. In spite of this the Hounds continued to press hard looking for the equalizer. If not for some excellent goaltending from Gonzalez they would have found it, but were stymied multiple times throughout the first.

The back-and-forth action continued until the final minute when Corey Stroeder came from nowhere to give himself a breakaway opportunity. He coolly slid the puck under Jay Lundgren to increase the lead to 2-0. The celebrations were short lived however as on the next shift Martens would reply for CLA, sneaking past the Bombers defence for a breakaway of his own and finishing upstairs on Gonzalez to head into the break down 2-1.

The Hounds would carry their momentum over into the second frame and earned an early power play. Tim Ratzlaff placed a slap shot just inside the post on Gonzalez’s glove side to even the game at two. In spite of losing their 2-0 lead the Bombers remained cool and began their push back. Within three minutes they restored their lead as Jason Koepke, promoted to the top line for this game, jammed home his second of the season on the doorstep. Thirty-five seconds later Adam Moulton would double the lead, the fortunate recipient of a Hounds goaltending error. The Bombers would head into the second intermission up by two.

Entering the third the Hounds showed what made them last years finalists, refusing to quit and maintaining their high level of play. Fortunately for the Bombers Gonzalez continued to stay hot, continually frustrating the CLA forwards and working well with his defence to shut down Martens. The Bombers forwards rewarded this strong effort with another goal, Tanner Timothy’s first as a bomber. Timothy finished well upstairs after turning the puck over on the half-boards, increasing the lead to 5-2.

The Hounds would respond quickly once again, scoring within twenty seconds to cut the lead to 5-3. However the Bombers had all the answers on this night. Alex Love restored the three-goal lead just over a minute later, picking his spot with a wrist shot from the top of the circle. The Bombers would not look back as they finished out the game clinically. Final Score: Bombers 6-3  Hounds.

The best effort of the season for TWU as they played a complete game from the back out. Limiting CLA’s scoring chances was key along with offensive contributions from all three forward lines. Rick Fairley was recognized by the Hounds as the Bombers Player of the Game.

Bombers Game This Weekend!

Bombers Dropped By Renegades

Looking to build off their complete 6-1 win over the Renegades last week, the Bombers came into the second game of their home-and-home series confident of securing a result. Adding to that confidence was the return of five-plus regulars to the lineup, up from the mere two lines they skated with the week before. In response to last week’s loss the Renegades brought out their full lineup as well, looking to provide a stiffer challenge this time around.

The bombers would strike first just five minutes into the period. A lovely passing play was finished by Adam Moulton in front, putting the Bombers up 1-0. Koepke and Stewart were credited with the assists, with Stewart extending his assist’s streak to three games. The Renegades were unfazed however and employed a fast-paced hard pressing defensive game to force the Bombers into mistakes. This strategy would pay off late as two goals in the last three minutes of the period would the give the Renegades a 2-1 lead heading in to the second.

Clearly taken back by a different Renegades team this time around the Bombers headed into the break frustrated by their play. Coach Jones reminded them that it was a long game and that they would need to dig deep in order to earn a victory. The message seemingly went unheard as the team came out flat and gave up another goal just over a minute into the period. This seemed to take the edge off the Bombers and led to another disappointing period of play, the lone bright being Dan Gonzalez in net, doing his best to stay the Renagades’ attack.

If the first two periods gave any indication as to how this game would play out the third would follow script and take it a step further. Two early goals from the Renegades put the game away and crushed an already disheartened Bombers team. The big Renegades lead to an increase in already chippy play from the heated rivals, resulting in the teams combining for twenty-four minutes in the third, have of the entire league total the previous weekend. Clearly frustrated, the Bombers would concede another goal late and skate out to their third loss of the season. Final score: Renegades 6 Bombers 1.

An all-around poor team effort from the Bombers who looked listless and uninspired most shifts. Finding motivation for next weeks game against last years finals opponent, the CLA Hounds, will be a key to success. Ben Stewart was recognized by the Renegades as the Bombers Player of the Game. Dan Gonzalez finished with thirty-nine saves on the night.

TWU Bombers – Bleed Orange

Bombers Move To .500

Saturday October 8th marked week 4 action in the CMCHL where the Bombers faced off against the TWU Alumni Renegades. Since their inception the Renegades have been a top rival of the Bombers, boasting many former players and TWU alumni. With a 3-0-0 start they claimed the top record in the league, looking to be early favorites this season. Due to Thanksgiving weekend the Bombers were down to eleven skaters, hoping to maintain their level of play over the forty-five minutes.

In typical fashion the Bombers had their customary strong start scoring just over a minute and a half into the game. Sam Ahlgrens face-off win found it’s way into the feet of Braden Humphrey who managed to shovel the puck behind the Renegades ‘keeper. The Bombers looked invigorated despite their lack of players and took the play to the Renegades for the remainder of the period. Humphrey would add another late as assistant captain Joel Robertson spotted him with an excellent pass down the middle, leading to the breakaway goal.

The Bombers managed to carry their momentum into the second period, surprisingly continuing to roll two lines with ease. Though persistent, they weren’t able to solve the Renegades goaltender in the second frame. At the other end of the ice Dan Gonzalez would work himself into a groove, recapturing some of his Vezzina form from a year ago. Despite constant net presence and some chippy play in front, the Rengades were unable to knock Gonzalez off his game. This would buoy a confident Bombers squad heading into the third period.

In two of the last three contest’s being unable to play a consistent forty-five minutes was the Bombers undoing. On this night however, Coach Jones was rewarded with an excellent third period from his team. In what was later named cited as the turning point in the game, an impressive short-handed shift from the Bombers was capped with captain Rick Fairley putting away a wrister upstairs. The Renegades were visibly shaken, now down 3-0, and were never able to recover from the setback.

To emphasize the scoreline, four minutes later Brad Dyrburgh would finish off a neat passing play from Koepke and Woof, hammering home a centering pass from the slot. Despite allowing a goal ten seconds later to ruin Gonzalez’s shutout bid, the Bombers would cruise through the rest of the third to victory. Dryburgh and Humphrey would add a late goal each, Dryburgh finishing with two on the night and Humphrey completing his hat trick. Jalen Wuerch would claim an assist on Dryburghs second, his first point as a Bomber. Final Score: 6-1 Bombers.

An excellent all around team game from the Bombers, who played their best forty-five minutes yet this season. Coach Jones was impressed with what he saw and hopes to build off the momentum and vault the team over the .500 hump.

Johnny Woof received his second Player of the Game award this season, collecting another free skate sharpening. Jason Koepke was recognized in-room for a strong game himself, along with Jalen Wuerch and Dan Gonzalez, who would finish with forty-two saves on the night.

Join us Saturday October 15th, 2011 as the Bombers face the Renegades once again in the second of the home-and-home series!

TWU Bombers – Bleed Orange

Bombers Fall To 1-2

Entering Saturday night’s CMCHL action the Bombers were looking to build on their 10-2 drubbing of the Coastal Saints. Standing in the way of their second win of the season were those same Saints, determined not to be embarrassed for a second week straight.

As has been the case so far this short season the Bombers came out flying putting pressure on the Saints early and were rewarded with two quick goals. The first came off the stick of rookie sensation Alex Love, who pounded one under the bar on a breakaway after a nifty takeaway at center ice. Next Johnny Woof chipped in with his second of the season, assisted by Ben Stewart. Stewart had found himself with the puck in the slot and slid it back to the on-charging Woof who lifted it high over the Saint’s ‘keeper.

Moving into the second, the Bombers once again started strongly and increased their lead to 3-0 off the stick of Jason Koepke, his first as a bomber. Jalen Weurch and Ben Stewart were credited with the assists. However, as the period wore on the Bombers began to lose a step and were fortunate to hold their 2-0 lead after some solid goaltending from Dan Gonzalez. Gonzalez faced fourteen shots in the second, turning them all aside to maintain the shutout heading into the second intermission. Coach Gareth Jones would stress a commitment to playing the system and reminded the players to commit to the whole fifteen minutes.

To the dismay of Coach Jones and the Bombers fans the team would once again let their guard down and conceded three straight goals in the third, including two in the last four minutes to tie the game. Dan Gonzalez was hung out to dry in the third, with a distinct lack of commitment to team defense to blame.

In the extra-frame the Bombers managed four shots to the Saints two but couldn’t pull out the win, giving up the all-important OT winner 2:17 into the period. In what was a heavily disputed decision the Saint’s Mike Ennis was credited with the winner after turning the puck over in front and squeezing one through Gonzalez. Gonzalez would claim the puck never crossed the line but unfortunately for the Bombers the decision was not to be.

Final Score: Saints 4-3 Bombers.

More lessons learned for the young Bombers squad as they move on looking to improve on their 1-2 start. More time together and a better understanding of Coach Jone’s philosophy can only help as the Bombers push forward in their quest for the 2011-2012 CMCHL Championship.

TWU Bombers – Bleed Orange

Bombers Down Saints

Heading into their second game of the season against the Coastal Saints, the TWU Bombers were looking to bounce back from an opening game loss to their archrivals, the Uptown Mayhem. In that game the Bombers had secured an early 2-0 lead but lost their focus down the stretch and ended up dropping a 5-3 decision.

Despite finishing out of the playoffs in the previous season the Coastal Saints had given the Bombers some trouble, splitting the season series. A win over the Orangemen in their opening game this season found the Saints looking to continue their strong start. The Bombers found themselves without four of their regulars including captain Rick Fairley and 2010-2011 CMCHL Rookie of the Year and Top Goaltender Dan Gonzalez. Glen McDonald of the North Delta Knights would fill in for Gonzalez on the night.

In his pre-game pep talk coach Gareth Jones stressed a commitment to Bombers style hockey, dump-and-chase and putting pucks on net. Keeping things simple would be a key to victory. The Bombers once again came out strong in the opening frame and peppered the Saints ‘keeper with sixteen shots. They found a way through at 5:51 when talented first year Sam Ahlgren notched his first to open the scoring. Just over five minutes later Ahlgren turned provider and assisted on Alex Love’s first as a Bomber to increase the lead to 2-0.

The Bombers continued to press and were rewarded with another goal early in period two as Love notched his second with a deft deflection. Minutes later Matt Wakutz continued the night’s trend and put away his first goal for the franchise off a nice feed from Brad Dryburgh. Up 4-0 the Bombers temporarily took their foot off the gas pedal and were burned for two goals against. The first was scored by the Saints on the power play at 7:32 of the second period. The second, scored just minutes into the third put the Saints to within two.

A repeat of the previous game where the Bombers had given up a two-goal lead seemed imminent. It was not to be this time, as the team dug in and fought back hard. Two goals in seventeen seconds by Braden Humphrey followed by Alex Love’s hat trick goal all but put the game away as the Bombers were now up 7-2. Adam Moulton then punctuated the goal-scoring surge with a heroic one-man effort, battling past two Saints defenders to put home his first of the night while on his back. Braden Jones would then add his first of the season with a nifty finish from the low slot to increase the Bombers lead to seven.

In what was a strange set of circumstances, Glen McDonald was forced to leave the game with three minutes to play. His prior commitments to the North Delta Knights meant an early exit and left the Bombers with six skaters on the ice and no goaltender. Undaunted, the Bombers controlled the puck for the majority of the remaining time and even managed to score their tenth goal of the night. Adam Moulton netted his second off an assist from Alex Love, who would finish with four points in the game. Final score: 10-2.

Tonight showed a much more consistent Bombers team who executed well offensively and cleaned up their defensive game from the previous week.  Stud defenseman Johnny Woof was recognized as the Bombers Player of the Game for his solid play in front of the net and his prowess as a puck carrier. Many thanks to Glen McDonald for filling in tonight and to all of the fans who showed up to cheer the team on. Make sure you’re in the stands next week as the Bombers take on the Coastal Saints once again, in the second game of a home-and-home series.
